What’s Not To Love About Light Bulbs

There was a story once upon a time about some boys who were minding the store while the owner was away. They were back in the storage room when some burglars came in. The boys discovered, initially by accident, that when they dropped light bulbs to the floor from the top of a tall ladder the noise sounded to the burglars exactly like gunfire. The crooks thought they were surrounded and took off running right into the long arms of the law.

Gardeners who live in warm climates have discovered that Christmas tree lights can protect fruit trees and other temperature sensitive plants during a sudden cold snap. Gardeners deck their plants with old fashioned lights that most people don’t use in their houses any more. Modern, cool burning LED lights are safer for decorating but there’s nothing like light bulbs that emit over ninety percent of their energy as heat to keep your oranges from freezing

And what about music. It wasn’t elementary school if you got through without making a pair of paper mache maracas. Who can forget wrapping strips of soggy, pasty newspaper in many layers around a light bulb. Then you had to wait a few days for the paste to dry so you could paint your masterpiece in bright color. Finally you would carefully whack your maracas on something hard to break the glass inside. Your maracas would make a lovely rattling sound and you would be ready to join the rhythm band.

Not many people still darn socks these days. But it’s a good, cost-saving thing to do, especially in times when budgets are tight. It’s easy to learn. You can even find videos on Youtube featuring little old ladies with funny accents showing you how it’s done.

Of course if you have never darned a sock before you are not likely to own a wooden darning egg. You need something with a rounded surface to hold the sock in place while you work. Well, guess what you can use as a substitute. A light bulb is just the right size and shape.

Of all the wonderful things light bulbs can do probably the best is to make light. People who have electric lights have no need for whale oil lamps or candles to read and darn socks by. Abe Lincoln may have read by the light from the fireplace but you don’t have to.

Light bulbs are now available in dozens of sizes, shapes and varieties. There are little ones to fit inside your refrigerator and huge ones to guide airplanes to the airport. There are light bulbs for porches and patios and for crystal chandeliers. You can get soft white bulbs to be gentle on your eyes or full spectrum bulbs that duplicate the effect of daylight. You can save energy with curly compact florescent lights (CFLs) or Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs. The new style bulbs burn cooler, use less energy and last longer than old style bulbs. They don’t last as long as the one in the Livermore CA fire station that has been burning for a hundred and nine years but that one is unusual.
